BHCA Monthly Meeting
May 9th, 2018

Maureen called meeting to order 7:00 pm

Jack Cunningham (and 16 month old son, Max) spoke about various topics related to the city:

  • Taco Bell liquor license application coming to council – Councilwoman will not be supporting this for various reasons
  • Go to SuzieAPrice.com to sign up for communications from the councilwoman.
  • May 19thSmall Business Workshop for the District.
  • Colorado and 3rd Streets are scheduled for street re-pavement in 2019. Also, Studebaker should be sooner than that.
  • Encouraged people to weigh in on their idea/concerns for regulating short term rentals – ordinance is under review now. Attend community meetings on topic.
  • Fielded a question about rent control. Maureen mentioned this is a topic among all neighborhood association boards and that these groups are interested in any balanced presentation or neutral forum or panel on the subject to help inform residents.

Diane De Walsche spoke about the current situation of finding an operator for Community Hospital. The Mayor will be meeting soon with staff in a closed session to hear about possible/proposed operators of emergency services at this location.

Will Cullen reported on the successful AOC7 children’s book drive. Nearly 300 books collected from BHCA and over 7,000 received over all for the distribution.

Maureen acknowledged the success of the art and architecture tour. Encouraged volunteers to sign up to help ‘lead’ our neighborhood artists’ group.

Derrick reported on the citywide June 21st event, Make Music Long Beach. People are encouraged to provide a venue for artists to play music (sign up by May 21).

Maureen reported that BHCA member and horticulturist, C.J. Crockett, will offer a Waterwise Garden Tour on June 7th. Sign up sheet was distributed. RSVP to [email protected] soon. Space is limited.

Member, Marianne, reminded us that the LB Water Department is offering its Lawn-to-Garden Tour on May 19. Free but reservations are required. http://lblawntogarden.com/11-2/tour-registration/. She noted her home is on the tour.

Maureen asked for volunteers for several ongoing needs. See sign-up sheet or email [email protected]

  • Deliver newsletters (3 routes available)
  • Help with planning regular meetings and procuring refreshment sponsors.

Maureen reported on her and Derrick’s meeting with Suzie Price on portion of PERoW behind Musical Theater West regarding future plans.

Maureen reported on landscaping on Red Car Greenbelt and process to remove foxtails.

Maureen reported on Board retreat. It is not going to be in Cabo. Requested anyone who was interested to volunteer as a scribe for the Saturday morning workshop.

Scott gave Treasurer’s Report.

Maureen announced that the Long Beach Heritage Great Homes Tour June 3rd would feature two Belmont Heights locations: Eliot Lane (two open homes) and the penthouse at the Gaytonia.

Next BHCA meeting is June 13th when the Long Beach Public Library will present an overview of online databases, access to online books, training, language-learning etc.
