sorry, got sidetracked with life and other priorities. this is a volunteer effort, and as much as I enjoy helping, sometimes it takes a backseat. I hope to have this done before the next meeting.

I believe even more important is recycling the filthy water next to the beach by tearing down that SEAWALL!

Nearly constant Helicopter noise

I live on 1st street between Loma and Euclid and have lived here for one year. I've been getting more and more annoyed at the seemingly constant drone of helicopters flying almost directly over my home. Finding this site, forum and thread is of some relief, since I now know that I'm not the only one who is bugged by this noise nuisance. I did check out the above mentioned link, called the number and left a message to lodge my complaint, but I wonder if any good will come of it.

addition to minutes from meeting of June 11

A meeting to discuss the Colorado Lagoon EIR report is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18th @ 6 PM at 340 Nieto Ave.

Developers of the Seaport Marina Hotel will present their project at Councilman DeLong's monthly meeting on June 19 @ 11:45 a.m. at the Long Beach Yacht Club.

This fiscal year's annual sidewalk replacement has been completed with 4 of the 13 blocks located in the Heights.

Councilman DeLong has secured permanent funding to treat storm water before it is discharged into Alamitos Bay. He is also asking the County of Los Angeles to fund a project that would install brush guards, collection baskets, and bacteria liners for the 5 storm drain outlets that dump onto our beaches and for the 86 City and 65 County catch basins.

The Belmont Shore Parking Commission is working on the design of "Gateway" signs to the Belmont Shore business district. The exact locations of the signs on both the east and west gateways is unclear at this time. The proposed design can be viewed at the following link:

www.longbeach.gov/district3/default.asp

Comments/input should be directed to either Councilman DeLong's office and/or the Belmont Shore Parking Commission.

I converted the PPT file (which is a proprietary format) and converted it to a PDF - which is more accesible - and 1/4 the size/bandwidth. (I added a picture too )

Proposed Trash / Recycling Bins

1. The City did not issue an RFP because the proposed vendor approached the City with the idea. Also, I am hearing both positive and negative comments regarding the proposed idea, but the issue appears more philosophical, not which vendor should the City choose.

2. I am working the 1 year buyout issue with the Director of Parks, Rec & Marine. This is one of the reasons the item was postponed from tomorrow's City Council agenda. Reconsidering the size of the bins is another reason.

3. I will work with the City Attorney to ensure that appropriate language is included in the agreement in case the vendor does not provide a quality service.

4. Yes

5. I'm not sure how to respond to this question. Some residents feel that the new containers will be an improvement over the existing containers. Other residents don't support advertising on the beach under any circumstances.

6. I believe most residents would prefer small containers. However, they do need to be large enough to do the job, otherwise we may end up with overflow trash on our beaches. Graffiti removal will be the responsibility of Shoreline Media.

7. It is my understanding that there are more trash cans (and more potential recycling) on Belmont Shore and Alamitos Beach, than on the Peninsula. The Peninsula is considered a lower volume area.

You've asked some very good questions. However, the bigger issue is "do we want to trade some advertising on our beaches in exchange for having a recycle program at no cost to the City and guaranteed revenue of $52,000 annually". If the proposal is approved, Councilmember Suja Lowenthal and I are working together to develop a "clean up the storm drains" project that would address the storm drains that dump into 5 outflows along our beaches.

Councilmember, 3rd District

Planning 2008 SEADIP Documents

A copy of Plannings 2008 SEADIP presentation, a schedule, and general resident's survey can be found at:http://www.longbeach.gov/plan/pb/apd/special_studies/seadip.aspThis is a 20+ year plan for development in and around the Los Cerritos Wetlands and can have major inpact on local traffic and our environment. Be sure to participate in the SEADIP update. Your input is critical. Last year LB Planning staff made recommendations supporting the following projects-

2007 Proposed Home Depot Retail/food(Variance from SEADIP zoned industrial, did not meet open space requirements, ilegal lot split). The Coastal Commission staff report concluded that:

- The site is zoned industrial, through the city's Local Coastal Program, and the council approved commercial use.

- The development "could result in unanticipated and cumulative impacts" on the wetlands.

- The project failed to meet the LCP's open-space requirements.

- Wildlife could be adversely affected.

- And traffic "may adversely impact coastal access."

The Home Depot project has lawsuits pending by the Los Cerritos Wetlands, AES (Power Plant), and University Park Estates resident's association. Over 6,000 LB residents signed petitions against this project.

2007 Proposed Lennar Seaport Marina 7 story 450 condo+ 170,000 square feet retail/food(Variance from SEADIP zoned hotel, over max height 35 ft, parking issues, did not meet open space or parking requirements, setback, Shopkeeper Rd. extension on probable wetlands). This project was approved by the Planning Commission and appealed to the City Council by residents.

Lennar's proposed project - as in the case of the Home Deport design center- has raised the concerns of the Coast Commission, environmentalists, who contend the project would aggravate traffic problems in the city's Eastern coastal area and endanger the Los Cerritos Wetlands habitat. The project has been put on hold and Lennar is not longer the developer for Sun-Taki the owners of the property.

2007 SEADIP Task Force recommendation for 4-5 story mix used, residential, Food, retail with increased density with changes in FAR, set-backs, height with no traffic studies with all project "traffic mitigation" to be suggested by developers.

Traffic from the Seaport Marina with Lennar's "traffic mitigation" predicted LOS F (Gridlock) at intesections-7th at Park and 2nd at Bayshore. Traffic analysis from downtown growth predicts a +15-20% increase on Ocean Blvd, Broadway, and 4th. Traffic on PCH is 30% higher than in 1975 and is growing at 1% per year. Traffic on 2nd street has increased 20% since 1975. Prior to the 1975 SEADIP plan the City conducted 2 traffic studies. The City has not provided any evidence that new SEADIP traffic can be fully mitigated to LOS C or better.

The City has failed to implement the proposed roadway infrastructure improvements (1991Transporation Plan) or the 1991 Belmont Shore/Belmont Heights traffic mitigation studies.

3700 block 5th street, FedEx theft by Domino's flyer deliverers

The guys that walk around putting junk mail in your door are also in on the package theft spree. The FedEx package was scanned as delivered at 11:45am, a man spreading Domino's flyers was seen in a red hat soon after. Then the red hat was seen through beveled glass again, and then disappeared into a van parked right in front of the porch and sped off.

The package didn't have anything valuable, but these thieves are a real nuisance!

I am putting a sign saying "No Solicitors" at my door and encourage everyone else on 5th to do the same. Maybe if we all do it, and enforce it, we will discourage opportunistic criminals from trying the various routines. Just today I heard a story from a neighbor who linked a guy asking for a magazine subscription, with the theft of their computer which happened soonafter.

We live on a quiet, friendly street. We take care of our properties and neighbors. But unwanted guests are seeing the lovely neighborhood as an easy target. Let's please try to preserve our belongings, and more importantly, our peace of mind.

UPS and USPS are informed of package problem

Craig,

I've notified mail carrier Erik and the two regular UPS delivery guys about our package problem. They will be taking more precautions. Of course, that means there is a greater chance they won't deliver if you're not home, but they are pretty good about remembering who wants parcels delivered in the event no one answers the door and who would prefer re-delivery.

I'm glad I have a PO Box for all my important stuff. But if you see a package sitting on my porch, please call, I'm usually home!
