Minutes from April 8, 2009 BHCA Meeting

As the City looks at updating the general plan and works toward finalizing the "2030 Plan", City staff want the plan to reflect what residents want in their neighborhoods. With that in mind, and as a follow-up to a previous meeting, Steve Gerhardt and City staff did a presentation on the existing general plan land use designations and the concept of "placetypes". Placetypes essentially talks about neighborhoods and how they should look; it is important to note that this concept is not intended to change residential zoning unless agreed to by residents of the neighborhood. Particular focus was spent on the zoning along Redondo and Broadway and Fourth. Photo montages of streetscapes was presented and discussion focused on how those streets "work" -- i.e. where the focus of pedestrian activities should be, mix of residential and commercial, esthetic features (trees etc). Input from attendees was varied with many good suggestions.

Please note the attached PDF files highlighting the commercial corridors that were the focus of this discussion.

The next phase will be to schedule a "walkabout" that would include residents, business owners, and commercial property owners, and City staff. Tentative dates for the "walkabout" have been identified as July 20 or 21. A four hour window will be set aside in order to lay the foundation for what we are trying to accomplish, do the "walkabout" and convene in order to solicit opinions and summarize. The group will be limited to 30 to 40 people; please notify me of your interest in being included either through email or by posting a response on this site.

Further information about the 2030Plan can be found at (please note that information regarding the "placetype" concept has not yet been uploaded):
